Yep, there is still some software that uses them.

And of course, the damned things have always been problematic which is why most software did away with them years ago.

Steve's problems with USB devices could very well be caused by those damned things!

Nope. Why don't you go to Amazon.com, search for "USB 3.0 Hub" and read the reviews. I can guarantee you some of the 1-2 star reviews will be from MacBook Pro Retina owners.

It's mainly the Apple USB Superdrive I can't get to work with any hub I have here, including powered ones. (When it is the sole device connected)
